Design
If you see a door on this website you like, I can carve it again. It will be similar to the one you see here. But it will not be exactly the same. I suspect it will be better. Each door is signed, dated, and numbered by me. All designs are copyrighted. I do not reproduce a pattern over again and again with grinders, routers and mechanical means. Each door is an original, and hand carved for each new client. When you are choosing a design, select a motif you can live with for decades and one that will retain your interest and attention. If someone wants a horse on their door, I ask that they send me a photo of their horse. My idea of a thoroughbred may not be the same as theirs and the client may actually want a quarter horse. I do not work from other artist's artwork, or professional photos. But if you have an idea, a sketch or can describe to me your vision, I will design the carving and revise it as we proceed on the project. My designs are original artwork. I welcome your ideas; personal photos or sketches to assist me in creating a door you will enjoy and see something new in every single time you look at it. That's a rich door!

Finish
Doors can be finished with a natural look or a combination of colored stains to accentuate specific design and carving techniques. Doors can be entry (exterior) doors or passage (interior) doors. The finish is what determines one from another. I finish all doors before they leave my studio. That way I know they have been correctly finished and treated and you will not have problems with them down the road.

Door Construction
Raised exterior panels are floating in the frame. Two panels, back to back, move independently of each other. This top quality construction allows them to flex, as they need to, and also prevents splitting of the panel over time. Using advanced joinery techniques, the engineered construction of the door assures a flat door that stays together over time.

Mantle Construction
My mantles look like a beam attached to the wall above the fireplace. Various types of woods can be used and are available.

Dimensions
Doors can be made any size you need and with any configuration you like. Arch top, radius top, and a variety of sticking and panel returns are all available. But because they are wood doors, for optimum stability, I suggest dimensions no wider than 3'6" or taller than 7' and up to 2 ¼" thick.

Pricing
My preferred carving wood is alder. It is a very stable door wood and provides a dense grain to achieve good detail in the carving. Other woods are available as long as they meet these requirements. Prices listed below are specific to a 3'x 6'8"x 1 ¾" alder door slab. These prices include the door slab, the carving and the finish.

  • Generally speaking a ½ door carving with figures and/or landscape will sell for $3,600.
  • A full door carving with figures and/or landscape will sell for $3,800.
  • A simpler motif, such as the "Golden eagle" is priced at $3,000.
  • Oversized doors, arch top. Radius top, sidelites, etc. are available but priced separately according to the dimensions and configuration needed.
  • Doors can be pre-hung at additional cost if the frame is purchased with the door. I will need to know the rough opening dimensions and the wall depth.
  • Sidelites can be provided also at additional cost.
  • Mantle prices vary according to the dimensions, wood species and design chosen. Plan on approximately $325 per linear ft.
  • Door prices subject to change due to cost and availability of chosen wood.

Payment methods:
Cash, money order, VISA and MasterCard.

Shipping and Crating
I custom build all the crates. The crates are 2"x4" framed OSB wafer board and the doors are stabilized to protect the finish. The door crates will withstand the roughest handling. Shipping costs will vary depending on the destination and the weight of the door. Below are some examples of shipping charges for a 180 lb. crated door.
